Hinga: Here and There
Watercolour woodblock print on Washi paper
580 x 892 mm
Edition of 8
Created while on residency in Japan, this large-scale woodblock print was a technical challenge. I was assisted by master Japanese printers who encouraged the use of unprinted paper areas in relation to areas of ink. The work is based on sketches of the Lakeside peak in Cape Town that I took with me to the lake district in Kawaguchiko. The title 'Hinga' suggests a conflation of the mountain peaks of both regions. The colours are inspired by the local Japanese landscape while the subject was worked from my South African references.
