Spontaneity is not something often associated with woodblock print given the time it takes to carve a block and then to print it. But I like the idea of mimicking a gestural brush stroke in a woodblock print. I like how a reading of that mark creates a visual link back to material origin: the tree from which the wood for the block, the bark for the paper and ultimately the ash for the sumi ink once originated.
